Charles Huls purchased The Dutch Market Ltd. in 1987. At that time, there was a single store located on St. Clair Street, (Chatham, Ontario Canada) and had just 3 employees. In the last ten years, there have been many changes at The Dutch Market. We still carry all the quality meats, cheeses, licorice, chocolate, groceries and gifts that our customers have come to rely on, but we have added to our selection and expanded our business. In the mid 90's, Charlie saw a real opportunity to improve the quality of our products and the price competitiveness of our store by importing directly from Europe. That importing for our own store grew to wholesaling to other Dutch and European Shops. Today we service bakeries, butcher shops, European specialty shops and grocery stores across Southwestern Ontario.

The Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC in old-spelling Dutch, literally "United East Indian Company") was established in 1602, when the Estates-General of the Netherlands granted it a 21-year monopoly to carry out colonial activities in Asia. It was the first multinational corporation in the world and the first company to issue stock. It remained an important trading concern for almost two centuries, paying an 18% annual dividend for almost 200 years, until it became bankrupt and was formally dissolved in 1800, its possessions and the debt being taken over by the government of the Batavian Republic.

Quality Development in Health Care in the Netherlands

The Dutch health care system's recent experiences with reform hold lessons for U.S. legislators and policymakers. In 2003, the Netherlands spent 9.8 percent of its gross domestic product on health care, below the spending levels in Germany, France, and Canada and more than one-third less than the United States. Even under the constraints of this budget, the Netherlands has implemented a number of health sector reforms that have led to important quality improvements. This report discusses several of these initiatives, including the central focus on primary care; reorganization of after-hours and emergency care; utilization of clinical guidelines, performance indicators, diagnostic treatment combinations; local collaboratives; and introduction of more stringent accreditation and evaluation procedures.
