BLASPHEMY!!! The Electronic Pipe

Good lord! Look at what I stumbled across!

e-PipeDescriptionThe ePuffer electronic Pipe is a high tech non-flammable product developed to provide smokers with a clean alternative to smoking. It contains, no carbon monoxide, no tar, and no cancer-causing chemicals. It looks, feels and tastes like a real Pipe.

When air flows through the device, it is detected by a microprocessor. This microprocessor then activates an atomizer which injects tiny droplets of the liquid into the flowing air. This produces a vapor mist which is inhaled by the user. The addition of propylene glycol to the liquid makes the mist better resemble normal cigarette smoke. The microprocessor also activates an orange glowing light at the tip to simulate real smoking experience.

I think ecigs are amazing for a smoker who wants to quit and I have used them to do this. But e cigarettes do emit nicotine in the vapor and nicotine restricts your blood vessels. For this reason I would not use my e cigarette inside, even if I was permitted.

Well, you could just do an Internet search for a seller, although I’d strongly suggest looking for one in a country near Iran with a better trade relationship than the one the United States currently has with Iran.

While purchased merchandise can be shipped to Iran, tobacco is restricted, and “e-cigarettes” and by default “e-pipes,” are under extreme scrutiny.

In addition, the smoking devices require lithium batteries. Lithium batteries are considered prone to exploding into flames. I’ve actually seen lithium cell phone battieries arrive in mail containers on fire inside of their packaging. So airlines are really, really cautious about handling lithium batteries.

Finally, although there isn’t any written policy to the effect, I have noticed that shipments of “e-” smoking devices and their refill cartridges often “disappear” for a week or two while in transit. I don’t want to suggest that they may be being rerouted to one of the quiet “sniffing” facilities, where they’re analyzed for more than just anthrax, but I’m not seeing it with shipments coming from any other consistent type of shipments.

So, let me summarize: If you really do want to try one of these, I’d search for an Internet seller shipping from a country with better trade relations with Iran, and a more relaxed attitude towards these smoking devices.

Now, here’s my two cents. I think these e-cigarettes, e-pipes, and vaping as a whole are stupid. I smoke a regular tobacco pipe, so I’m not going to harp on health reasons, but I am going to touch on them. So here’s my rant:

First, we know about the long term effects of tobacco use. We also know the incidence of lung cancer amongst pipe smoker is the lowest of any tobacco user, as well as the incidence of any cancer. But I’d be an ass to say it’s without risk.

But you’d be a bigger ass to presume that “vaping” comes without health risk. There are no long-term studies, but already we know that one of the byproducts of vaping, as the chemicals are heated before ingestion is glycol. That’s the toxic chemical used as radiator fluid. Here’s a simple comparison for glycol levels: One e-cigarette produces the same level of glycol as a pack of cigarettes.

And that’s just one of the chemical issues. What happens is as the various chemicals in the cartridges are heated, they create byproducts during and prior to smoking. And unlike tobacco pipe smoking, e-smoking draws the “smoke” into the lungs.

Next, it’s goddamn expensive. You’ve got to constantly buy those cartridges and batteries. And someone else has to pay for processing your disposing of the cartridges and batteries. If your not recycling the things, then your dumping them into a toxic landfill somewhere, upping the whole health issue.

Finally, it’s fucking annoying. Even tobacco cigarette smokers more discrete than e-smokers. They presume that since it’s “not” smoking, they can use it where regular smoking products can’t (most often not true). Smoking one seems more like work, more than relaxation. Exhalation is forced, like trying to breathe fire. I just want to punch these guys in the face repeatedly.

Instead, I light my own pipe, and calm down, watching the smoke curl out softly, and hope that the radiator fluid takes it’s toll on these hipsters.

But hey, that’s just me. 🙂
